Karen,
Thanks for the kernel of knowledge. This has been an intriguing topic for a few years. Now that I inherited a department full of Gen Y's, it has moved to the "very important" category.

Karen:

Your article is right on the money. I have heard so much gripping about Gen Y's (they're spoiled) but my experience has been completely different. Gen Y's have impressed me as talented, very self assured and willing to say exactly what they think. They are not afraid to take risks. These qualities are things I believe we Baby Boomer parents tried to instill in our children and we succeeded.

I plan to take your advice and get a "reverse mentor." What a great idea!

This article does a nice job of summarizing the issue. I was especially glad to see the section titled, 'Some Things Never Change.' At their core, the preferences of Gen Whyers have always existed, albeit in different concentrations than they do now. For my organization, it has been more about shifting focus than completely overhauling the way people manage.

I find it interesting that they are characterized as questioning 'why they have to listen to their business elders' and also 'passionately tolerant of diversity.' I would think someone who was passionately tolerant of diversity would understand the value that their business elders bring to the table.

What I wonder is, now that there is a larger concentration of high-performance individuals, which used to be rare, what will set individuals apart? If they're all nimble and moving around frequently, what will lead to any particular individual surpassing others? Thoughts?

It's a good, thought-provoking blog!

What a great article, highlighting how Gen Y is likely to differ and reminding us that we're all basically alike. Generation Y's tech ease really stands out here, as does your humor at the end.

Thanks, Karen. This information will be very helpful to the staff at the JCPS Volunteer Talent Center who work with Vista team members who, for the most part, are recent college grads giving a year of service to thier communities.
My limited experience with our Y generation Vistas and my son and his friends support many of the ideas shared in your blog. They have a wealth of gifts that we all need to know how to tap into and appreciate.

Good article, blog, email, whatever it was. I have consciously chosen NOT to IM because I find it too intrusive. I like my peace. I think all of us use the technology that helps us to live the lifestyle we want. And very few of us will ever reinvent ourselves so much that we leave cherished habits behind.

Thanks for the provocative!
