Coaching as a Leadership Skill

An action-learning workshop focusing on the art and practice of coaching others so that they perform at higher and higher levels.

Are you a referee? Or do you know how to actively coach and develop your people?

Becoming a masterful coach is a leadership skill that is becoming increasingly important as organizations look for ways to stay ahead in a highly competitive and quickly changing world. Today’s managers must be able to inspire, motivate, and train employees so that they can perform to the best of their abilities. Today’s leaders need this skill if they are to achieve the necessary results, and so that they can support their employees’ growth into tomorrow’s leaders.

This workshop focuses on the art and practice of coaching. Extensive practice and videotape feedback are integrated with the latest coaching practices.

You’ll learn how to apply the three foundational concepts that a coach can provide: assessment, challenge, and support. You’ll also learn how to determine if the person you need to coach is open to change and is prepared to work hard. You come away with the skills needed to help your people perform to the very best of their abilities – and to constantly raise the mark for their performance.

This workshop is designed to increase your skills and effectiveness as a developer of people. You’ll learn how to:

  • Build trust in the coaching relationship
  • Deliver “tough” news effectively
  • Ask the right question at the right time
  • Support an individual in getting clear about goals
  • Actively listen in collaborative conversations
  • Offer feedback that is constructive and productive
  • Match your coaching style to an employee’s needs
  • Improve your own “emotional intelligence” and help the individual you are coaching to do the same

Kathleen McSweeney, Judy Futch and Karen Wunderlin, both executive coaches and master workshop leaders, teach the course.

Feedback from workshop participants

“The video portion made me very conscious of the subtleties of how my responses can be perceived”

“I think it made me more comfortable addressing concerns early and directly; I realized that I have to change my style to suit the need of the person with whom I am coaching.”

“I have used the skills particularly with younger reports, and have seen excellent progress in their development and contribution to our business, particularly with project work!”

Cost for the workshop is $1,095. Includes all materials, course instruction, and lunches. Enrollment is limited.
